CrowdWater is a hydrological citizen science project. Everybody with an interest in water can contribute and collect hydrological data in a simple way. The collected data is used to model floods and droughts as well as to supplement existing measurements. It is a main goal of CrowdWater to be applied in remote regions and developing countries.
There is a worldwide decrease of available hydrological data. At the same time, since resources are getting more and more scarce, it is more important than ever to collect and process data about the availability of water. CrowdWater is a possibility to collect low-cost hydrological data with a high spatial resolution.
The CrowdWater app allows citizen scientists to collect data about water level (with physical and virtual staff gauges), discharge, soil moisture, temporary streams, plastic pollution and stream type without need for any measuring instrument.
In the CrowdWater online game, data quality of the uploads in the category "virtual staff gauge" is checked and if needed improved by contributing citizen scientists.
The CrowdWater game can be found at our project website.
