The Vienna Astronomy Working Group aims to disseminate and deepen knowledge of astronomy, with a particular focus on promoting amateur astronomy from its very beginnings to observations that can be analysed scientifically. This covers the entire spectrum, from the initial fascination to citizen science. As a not-for-profit organisation, we share our experience – in some cases spanning decades – of observing the night sky with those interested. This is also intended to bridge the gap created by the near-total absence of astronomy in the local education system.
Our link to citizen science stems from our strong ties with local research and educational institutions, as well as our accessible presentation of interesting topics in which participants can collect valuable data with minimal effort. Examples include counting meteor showers, estimating the brightness of variable stars, and determining the moment when one celestial body eclipses another.
Interested members are taught the knowledge and skills required through talks, interactive workshops and practical exercises. Accessibility is always a key priority. As a group focusing on the natural sciences, we are committed to the unifying spirit of astronomy. We are all fascinated by the starry sky.
