ADAPT4K explores how forests can better cope with climate change together with citizens and forest owners. By collaboratively observing and measuring forests, valuable knowledge for their future is generated.

What are the aims of the project?

The aim of ADAPT4K is to support climate-resilient forest development in Lower Austria together with the public. Over several years, data on forest conditions—such as drought stress, tree health and soil properties—are collected in selected forest sites. These insights support forest owners in decision-making while raising public awareness of the importance of climate-adapted forests.

How can you participate in the project?

Interested citizens and forest owners can actively take part as Citizen Scientists. Participation takes place in so-called Forest Living Labs, where simple observations and measurements are carried out in the forest, supported by workshops, excursions and joint field activities. Participants can learn, exchange experiences and contribute their own observations. Participation is flexible, and every contribution helps shape the future of our forests. Background

Climate change poses major challenges for forests in Lower Austria. Rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns particularly affect spruce forests, which cover a large share of the region, increasing drought stress and the risk of bark beetle infestations. ADAPT4K addresses these challenges by combining scientific research with local experience.
