  • Participation: Open participation

The goal of the Vienna Astronomical Association is to disseminate and deepen astronomical knowledge, with a particular focus on fostering amateur astronomy—ranging from initial steps to observations capable of yielding scientific data. Our activities thus span the spectrum from a first encounter—sparked by a fascinated gaze at the sky—to active participation in citizen science. As a non-profit organization, we share decades of observational experience with those interested in the night sky. In doing so, we also aim to bridge the gap created by the largely absent role of astronomy in the local education system.
Our connection to citizen science is forged through strong ties to local research and educational institutions, as well as through the accessible presentation of topics that allow enthusiasts to collect valuable data with minimal effort. Examples include counting meteors, estimating the brightness of variable stars, or determining the precise timing of an eclipse where one celestial body obscures another.
We impart the necessary knowledge and skills to interested members through lectures, interactive workshops, and practical exercises, always prioritizing accessibility and ease of entry. As a group dedicated to the natural sciences, we embrace the unifying spirit of astronomy: the night sky fascinates us all.
