The Austrian Entomologists’ Association (AÖE) is a nonprofit organization that has dedicated itself to the world of insects in all its various facets since 1949. We conduct research, promote entomology, publish findings, and provide advice on insects and the protection of their biodiversity. Our goal is to actively disseminate entomological knowledge and thereby bridge the gap between science and society. In doing so, we bring together experienced entomologists, young researchers at the start of their careers, amateurs, and others interested in the diversity of insects and their ways of life.
These goals are achieved through a diverse range of activities organized by the association and its members: the annual international entomology conference, talks, informal get-togethers, brief updates on the “Insect Blog,” field trips, a Christmas party, and the management of a specialized library. In addition, our members are always enthusiastically represented at externally organized events with a focus on citizen science, such as the Biodiversity Days in Vienna and Lower Austria or the City Nature Challenge.
To make entomological content accessible to a diverse audience, we publish two journals: The “Journal of the Austrian Entomologists’ Association” (ZAÖE) features original scientific papers in German or English covering all fields of entomology. For example, newly discovered insect species are described there each year. The “AÖE News” are published online and feature updates on the association’s activities, personal news such as honors and obituaries, book reviews, and more.
Among the AÖE’s numerous initiatives is the selection of an annual theme, the “Insect Group of the Year,” around which many of the association’s activities are organized. Through easily accessible lectures, field trips, and photo exhibitions on the annual theme, we also promote the concept of citizen science and contribute to the exchange of knowledge between experts and the general public.
